Finnish school food system
There was recently a survey which examined the efficiency of different
school systems. Surprisingly the Finnish school system was evaluated as the
best one. When the researchers started to search the reasons for this
unexpected success, they found out that regular decent school lunches
improve pupils´ concentration.
Finnish schools have had their developed food systems for more than 50
years. In Finland free school lunches were first offered after the Second
World War. In the beginning the lunches were not so delicious and the meals
were usually soups. The quality of school lunches rose slowly to its current
level. Nowadays the quality of the meals is high. Lately extra attention has
been paid to food´s healthiness. A basic school lunch includes either rice
or potatoes and some meat. There is also salad included in every lunch. And
all this is completely free of charge for us students.
